Freestyle was more than just the way, or what, you rode. It a life. I never forgot that, and really live accordingly. Its a very REAL thing. Vander was a radical human being. A machine well ahead of its time. great site. Love the vanderoll!

Just ran across this site after having a conversation about Tuff's and Bar Endos... Great tribute to not only Dave, but also to the Crub Dogs, the San Fran scene and Freestylin' in general. It's funny being able to look back 15 years ago and still remember most of those exact photos and where I was when I first saw them. Vander was one of the cats that made me persue the dream of working in the action sports world...

When I was about 13 years old I started getting into skating (boards)I also did a lot of dirt jumping on my bike before that.I always thought I had to pick one or the other. One day I went to a contest in San Leandro and I saw this dude riding doing flatland tricks I was stoaked. Then I saw the same dude doing tricks on a skateboard. I was even more stoaked! that is really what started my 18 years of riding, he was the first one I ever saw doing both. Dave was my idol as a kid and still in mind played a big role in giving me the freedom to think that nothing is imposible.

Vander died on my 22nd birthday. I was three months out of BMX PLUS! and freelancing. Showed up for a shoot the next day and heard the news. A pall was cast on the whole day and I wanted to cancel the session but could not because of the omnipresent deadline. <P> 15 Years ago. Wow. Each birthday since, I've thought about him, if just for a moment. RIP, Homeboy! M

The good old days of riding are back in my memory again thanks to this site. Back when the sport was so much fun and there were barely any attitudes. Drob, great job.

Aaaaah! The good old days! I started riding when i was 7...had a red Raleigh Burner...now 22 years on i must say that the bikes are better...not sure if the sport is, though.....too much attitude...far too trendy.....bring back the 'peterson' and the vander-roll any day!!
