I saw a picture of Dave in Freestylin' when I was in high school. He was wearing shorts with sweatpants underneath, which I thought was soooo cool, so I did the same thing. Except they were too tight, and it was in Miami where it's a zillion degrees. I looked like an idiot. I never did that again! For some reason I decided to look him up on the net today, and voila. I knew he was gone, but it's amazing how something as silly as sweatpants can bring back memories of a great time in my life. I didn't know you, Vander, but thanks for the gift of remembering. PS Oddly, I had a Ray Meyer freestyle deck at the time, and at the time I don't think I was aware of the connection or not...!

Thanks for putting this together. I remember waiting for the next picture of Dave to show up in the magazines, so I could go out learn his latest trick. Dave and Pete Augustin were the reason I got into street. Thanks Dave..R.I.P. Ken Chapin, Grand Rapids MI

I didn't know Dave, but I'll never forget cracking my head on the pavement trying to do a Vanderoll. I almost wore oout my Curb Dogs video, hardly anyone brought skating and bikes together like that back then. Good to see his memory kept alive like this, I really enjoyed this site.

I was talking to a buddy about the X games and whenever somebody brings it up, I instantly think Dave and tell the stories of my buddy who could unimaginable tricks on his bike, back before anybody was doing anything. I always say it was like the first 'barefooters' in waterskiing, which happened around the sametime. I didn't know Dave as the star. He was my buddy. A guy who would come see our 'garage band' play and hang out in the manor. Of course with his bike. I had seen the tricks when we just hung out and shot the bull. Listening to his stories and wishing I could keep up, but I wasn't a rider. Seeing the ramp work from the street in the back of Joe's parents house. Great to see the cassette, the Heart and especially the Elton, that was the stuff he, me and Michael B listened too. I would say we only hung out 100 times in our lives at best, but with Dave you felt like you were his best friend and not an outsider. And I was an outsider. Thank you so much for the website, brought back a lot of great memories and gives that chance to go back and see how Dave was just so amazingly creative. A great guy and a great friend. Dave is thought of everytime I see anything on ESPN that is extreme.

Hey Drob, awesome job! From the day back in 1982 when I first meet Vander...he dated my sister...(damn, he dated everyones sister) LOL He took me under his wing, he was like a big brother to me. He introduced me first to racing in Sunol, and then I started freestyling. We hung out a lot even worked together at Hank and Frank Bike shop in Oakland, CA. Did those shows back in the day. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of my memorabilia from the past so this site helped to bring back deep memories...even a tear. Vander (and my dear sister) will never be forgotten. Much love and thanks for everything Vander. Till we meet at the crossroads... Angelo Juras

There are a few sayings that I think are appropriate... "The faster you leave, the longer you're remembered". "When a leopard dies he leaves his coat. When a man dies he leaves his name". I never knew Dave personally, only through the pages of BMX and Freestyle publications. But I felt a bond with him because of our common interest in the sport we both loved. Dave definately was an innovator and a role model. In some ways, he was also ahead of his time where freestyle/street riding is concerned. So, If anyone reading this is into freestyle. And you were born after 1988, then you need to pause and say thanks to Dave Vanderspeck, a true innovator... "Something lives only as long as the last person who remembers it". Rest in peace Dave. You will never be forgotten.

I met Dave in highschool, he had graduated already but liked to hang out to check out the cute chicks I suppose. I fell in love with him instantly. We became best friends over time. He lived around the corner from me and spent alot of time at my house. I always new he was outside the house when I would hear his chicken cackle. He couldnt just ring the doorbell like everybody else. I sure miss that chicken cackle. I miss everything about Dave. The way he smelled, his smile, his arms (gawd they were nice) his laugh, his love for people, his voice, his dorkiness. That was the best, he could be so cute and coy. He left a void in my heart that can NEVER be replaced. I have a few photos, one of his skateboards, a racing shirt and many memories. Call me selfish, I want more, I wish he were here. I miss him madly. Damn you Dave! Still love you bro, see you someday I hope...Your friend, Merky Waters
