Vander's name just popped into my head after many years. We crossed paths many times round San Leandro, where I lived from '79-90. Two things I remember about Dave:
I had four people, including Dave, his board, and his bike, in my VW Bug going to Bayfair BART. He'd help me shift into 3rd gear with his leg. We laughed our asses off!
Dave telling me he wanted to have a kid so he could teach him the wrong words for common things, such as calling a tree a giraffe just to mess the kid up.
All this fun was 2 weeks before Dave died. He was one of a kind.

I needed to revise from my last sign in. I meant to say that I didn't find out until the next school day morning which was a Monday. I will never forget how many people came to the funeral. It was overwhelming. You couldn't fit everyone inside. There were people outside and around the building.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen pictures of Dave. The site is very cool. Dave was like my older brother. He was good friends with my sister. We would hang out and he had taken me out to lunch one time and my friends thought that it was so cool that I was hanging out with him. I was only 13 at the time. Little did I know that the last time that I would talk to him would be only hours before his death. He said he needed to talk to my sister but she wasn't home and he said he loved me like a sister. Those were his last words to me. I found out at school the next morning and I was in shock. All these years later I still think of him.
I miss ya bro.

i am from germany, did bmx-racing from 82-86 on a serious level and met dave and the curb dogs on their european tour in gevelsberg / germany in 84.
we spend some time with him and the dogs after the show and did some tricks together. his team manager handed over the trophy to me on that day and he also kind of quite liked my sister... great guy, great team, great memory. thx a lot!

Great tribute to Vander! Your site brought back so many great memories of the early days of Freestyling. I'm 35 now, I have an office job and a mortgage...time spent riding my bike were some of the best years of my life.

What a tribute to Vander! I got into BMX in 1981 and all this information about Dave and the Curb Dogs just bings back so many good memories of Freestyle in the 80's. It must have been great to ride with him and he truly deserves to be remembered and honored for his innovation and dedication to riding!
RIP Dave...
