Amazing site, one of the best I've visited. A great tribute to Vander, too. I'd been riding a little while at the time, finding it hard to get hold of US magazines where I lived. Then one month in R.A.D., Tim L-B printed an obit with a pic shot at South Bank. I was shocked, and it still makes me sad that people with so much to give (I'm thinking of Cobain here, too) feel they have to bring it to such a sudden & conclusive stop. Now I'm rediscovering all the old-school stuff again, the kind of material I missed out on is right here. Well done. Good to see Jim Dellavalle still hanging around (in the guestbook). Must get together for another bottle of Malibu and your latest business card if you're ever at Southsea again, Jim.

I was heavily into freestyle in the 80s. I was on a mission for my Church when Vander died and I was out of the loop, so I never really got the story and I was always curious as to what happened. I think a lot of oldschoolers don't realize how much Vander influenced the sport. Your site does an excellent job of telling his story. I invented a bike a number of years ago that allows you to do a "Vander Roll" without letting go of the bars. It is called a Rollerbike. I received a lot of attention for this invention and I know I was inspired by the "vander Roll". Maybe I should rename it "The Vanderbike". Dave influenced many people that he never met, like me.

Maurice, this is a killer site! I applaud your efforts with repect to your long-lost friend. I vividly recall when I was young and could not afford a Skyway. Now, at the age of 27 I bought one through ebay. I have built the bicycle to my liking and ride it with pride. I make believe I am sponsored by Skyway and riding with Mat, Eddie, Scott, and everyone else on the team. Thanks for the memories. You not only share these precious freestyle moments with your past teammates, but with individuals like myself. Thanks, Francisco

As a Bay Area local, I would see Vander at the freestyle shows in Oakland, and on TV, like on Evening Magazine. His contributions to freestyle can never be overestimated. When I was lucky enough to locate his Boss Freestyler frameset, it instantly became one of my favorite items.

I was shocked by the collection you have. This is just simply amazing. One word from 20inchO 'Outstanding'. This is what we call years of work put together. I'm not sure if Dave V. knows that he was already an icon in Singapore back in the 80s'. We remember him as the guy who did vander-roll. We miss him from old school Singapore.

Wow-What an amazing collection of pics and stories! I remember the Curb Dogs coming out to F&M Cyclery in Fremont with the big half-pipe and blasting Ozzy. It was quite a change from the "factory" tours with the uniforms and synchronized tricks. Watching Vander ride, as well as the rest of the crew, definitely influenced my teenage years. Doing track stands and balancing tricks at the underground garage near the Hub with my friends are some of my best memeories. Drob-Thanks and keep up the great work.

Drob- Man, you nailed it perfect!! I grew up in the East Bay with Vander during the day. He opened my eyes to the Action Sports world, with out his vision, I would be still out there trying to swim on the bottom with the other bottom feeders. Instead, now I am still close to scene he shared with all of us working for Oakley. As Vander once said: "It's all about fun for EVERYONE, not for a bunch of dorks who "think" they are cool. I know exactly where the brick at the bridge is, I'll be in SF next week and get a pic for you asap. You did a great job with this site!! Thanks, I'm sure it means a lot to everyone who was touched by Vander. -Blick
