I grew up with Dave. Lived around the corner on Nassau. I saw him the week before at a party and gave him a ride home to wherehouse. On the way there he asked me if I ever do stupid things but cant stop. I said like what? He told me he was doing coke and couldnt stop. I didnt know what to say. I just figured it's Vander he will be ok.

I remember seeing him at Joe's ramp in San Leandro. He just did his thing and loved it. Laughed with everyone at everything, enjoyed life and living. It was great to meet him.

i remember all this old stuff, sure brings back some memories. I myself live in the UK and never saw him ride but remember being influenced a lot by the content of the curb dogs in some british magazines and the 'freestylin' magazine which my cousing got over from the states... anyway when the bmx scene died over here i gave up for a long time, only getting back into it again at the age of 35 (old git) but now i'm out again due to injury of the neck variety... anyway nce to catch up on old times Steve

Really a touching story about Vander which brings a tear to the corner of my eye every time i read it. I an now 32, i never had the chance to know him personally, just what i saw in magazines, but as i have grown older i have realized how innovative he was. I wish i could visit the memorial park some day to pay respect to Vander. As i'm writing this note, i am also in a process of completing a Boss Freestyler bike to express my respect for Dave Vanderspek and what he has done for the sport of freestyle. Thanks for writing all the great stories on this site. It is THE BEST one around. RIP Vander. Sincerely yours, Timo "2Fresh" Lanki out of Helsinki, Finland.
